About The Event
After years of republican rule and military dictatorship, the monarchy returned—but it would never be the same. In Restoration and Revolution (1660–1689): The Birth of Britain’s Constitutional Monarchy, we explore how the uneasy return of Charles II and the seismic events of the Glorious Revolution transformed Britain’s political order forever.
How did a king once again take the throne after the trauma of civil war and regicide? What tensions remained beneath the surface? And how did the 1688 revolution usher in a new principle—that monarchs must rule with Parliament’s consent?
Under the guidance of Alex, a leading scholar and Fellow of Christ’s College Cambridge, the McDonald Institute of Archaeological Research, and the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies at HSE University Moscow, this session brings to life a pivotal period when Britain reimagined sovereignty, law, and liberty.
Join us to uncover how the Restoration and Glorious Revolution laid the groundwork…
