On July 11, CSIA hosted Professor Mengwei Yan, Executive Vice Dean of the Institute for Contemporary China Studies at Nankai University, for an engaging lecture titled “Philosophy and the Contemporary World”.
Professor Yan, a distinguished scholar of Marxist and political philosophy, has served as Visiting Professor at the University of Saskatchewan and published over 160 papers and multiple monographs.
In his talk, he explored how philosophy responds to the challenges of modern life: What questions should philosophy address today? What issues define our contemporary world? And how can individuals live with clarity and integrity within it? Blending theory with relatable examples, he showed that philosophy is not abstract speculation but a reflective way of living. Through the simple act of “cleaning a room,” he illustrated philosophy’s two dimensions — value (is it worth doing?) and method (how can it be done well?).
