About the event

The Ely Cultural Field Study offered participants an immersive encounter with one of the region’s most distinctive cathedral cities. Led by Alex, the group explored Ely Cathedral, Cromwell’s House and the historic streets of Ely, while also experiencing the lively atmosphere of the annual Ely Eel Day. The trip brought together architectural history, local identity, religious heritage and community celebration in a single day of cultural discovery.


Alex’s interpretation introduced participants to Ely’s special status as a city, its relationship with the cathedral, and its historical geography as a settlement shaped by marshland, water and climate. These explanations helped participants understand Ely as a place where landscape, religion and civic identity have long been intertwined.
