About the event

This Alex-led College Tour invited participants to encounter Cambridge not only as a university town, but as a city shaped by centuries of religious change, scientific discovery, civic life and institutional memory. Beginning at Emmanuel College, the group moved through Downing Street, the New Museums Site and Free School Lane, gradually uncovering how education, social access and intellectual ambition have transformed the city over time.


One of the key moments of the walk was the visit to the Old Cavendish Laboratory, where participants reflected on the discovery of the structure of DNA and the scientific revolutions that have made Cambridge central to the modern history of knowledge. From there, the route continued to St Bene’t’s Church, the oldest surviving building in Cambridge, where Alex introduced the symbolic and architectural significance of Norman religious space within the urban fabric.
